Prayer as Night Falls: Experiencing Compline

My first book, published by Paraclete Press in 2013, “allows you to experience and participate in the last of the daily cycle of fixed-hour prayer: Compline.” It’s a service (or office) that monks and nuns pray at the close of the day, and in the mid-1960s I joined a group at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle, which at the time was the only non-monastic choir singing the office in English; now there are scores of groups (many with websites) that carry on this tradition. The book tells the story of the history and themes of the office, woven together with reflections from my own spiritual journey. Musical selections illuminate the book’s chapters, and can be heard on the book’s website.
